The “Butterfly Button” project is the winning initiative of the annual hackathon held by the Michal Sela Forum and Google. It is a feature that can be integrated into any website or application, allowing discreet access to help and support in cases of domestic violence.

The hackathon is held annually in memory of Michal Sela, who was murdered by her partner, with the goal of promoting innovative technologies designed to save lives and help prevent violence against women.

Approximately 80 teams participated in the hackathon, with around 30 of them led by women survivors of domestic violence who took part in technology and innovation workshops. Out of all participating initiatives, seven projects reached the final stage.

First place was awarded to the “Butterfly Button” – a feature that can be embedded into any website or application, transforming digital platforms into safe and discreet access points for people seeking help in situations of domestic violence.

The system is designed to connect users with relevant support services based on their country, geographic region, and language, while maintaining full privacy, anonymity, and no traces on the user’s device or browsing history.

Today, the Butterfly Button is already integrated into websites, organizations, and municipalities as part of the vision to turn every website and application in the world into a safe and accessible space for receiving help.

The project was led by Peri Shalom and Netanel Amar. According to Amar:
“When I was growing up, reaching out to a support hotline often came with shame and fear. The ability to seek help in a discreet and simple way through everyday digital spaces can change lives.
